A

Acid
This is a hazardous material and must be brought to one of our Tox-a-Way days throughout the year. Please call or visit our website for Tox-a-Way event dates.

Adhesives
This is a hazardous material and must be brought to one of our Tox-a-Way days throughout the year. Please call or visit our website for Tox-a-Way event dates.

Aerosol Cans
When containers still have product in them or are still under pressure, most are considered hazardous waste and must be brought to one of our Tox-a-Way days throughout the year. Please call or visit our website for Tox-a-Way event dates.  If they contained food-related products(empty) or are empty containers that did not contain paint, pesticides/insecticide, or hazardous liquid you may dispose of these in your curbside bin or one of our convenient drop off sites.

Agricultural Plastic
Agricultural plastic cannot be recycled; please dispose of it in the garbage. Burning agricultural plastic is illegal. Burning plastic releases toxic chemicals into the air.

Air Conditioners
This is a hazardous material and must be brought to one of our Tox-a-Way days throughout the year. Please call or visit our website for Tox-a-Way event dates.

Alkaline Batteries
Rechargeable and alkaline batteries (AAA,AA,C,D,etc) are accepted at several locations throughout Decatur County. Please call us at 812-663-0960 for location information. Car Batteries must be brought to one of our Tox-a-Way days throughout the year. Please call or visit our website for Tox-a-Way event dates.  If you are recycling 9 volt or rechargeable batteries please tape both ends of the battery terminal to prevent fire

All-Purpose Cleaner
This is a hazardous material in its concentrated form. Dilute and use or bring to one of our Tox-a-Way days throughout the year. Please call or visit our website for Tox-a-Way event dates.

Aluminum Cans
Accepted for curbside recycling and at all drop off sites. Please rinse out any remaining liquid or food from the cans. Check your Yellow Pages for scrap metal dealers who may be willing to accept your cans for payment. We do not give payment.

Aluminum Siding
Aluminum siding can be recycled at most metal recycling businesses. Do not put in recycling bins. If still usable, consider donating to Habitat for Humanity.

Ammonia
This is a hazardous material and must be brought to one of our Tox-a-Way days throughout the year. Please call or visit our website for Tox-a-Way event dates.

Ammunition
Contact your local law enforcement agency for information.

Answering Machines
These may be brought to one of yearly Electronic Recycling Events (please check our calendar for dates) or at Tox-a-way Day.

Antifreeze

Ant Poison

Appliances
Appliances may be brought to one of our Tox-a-Way days throughout the year. Please call or visit our website for Tox-a-Way event dates.  You can also call local metal scrap dealers such as River Metals Recycling (812-663-5587) and they may be able to accept and pay you for the item.

Area Rugs
First, if there is any wear left in the rug, consider finding someone who could use it. Avoiding the landfill or transfer station is generally a good thing, but it may be your only option. Our recycle drop off and curbside containers cannot accept this item. Decatur Hills Landfill in Decatur County can accept this item for a fee.

Arm Chair
If furniture is in good condition, donate it to a local charitable organization. Check with your local trash hauler for other options. Decatur Hills Landfill in Decatur County can accept this item for a fee. You cannot recycle this item.

Art & Hobby Paint
If the paint can be cleaned up with water, let it dry out and dispose of in regular trash. If paint thinners or solvents are necessary for clean up, then this must be brought to one of our Tox-a-Way days throughout the year. Please call or visit our website for Tox-a-Way event dates.

Arts & Crafts Supplies
Check with your local schools, youth organizations, or Sunday school classes to find out if they are interested in a donation of used or leftover art supplies in good condition. Items not suitable for donation may be garbage (for instance, a worn-out paintbrush). Oil based products must be taken to Tox-a-Way Day that occurs the first Saturday after Labor Day at the Decatur County Fairgrounds.

Asbestos
Requires special handling by certified contractors. Please call a local landfill about possible options. This material has to be put in a special type of container to properly transport.

Ashes
Ashes are not recyclable, but may be placed in the garbage once they are stone cold!

Asphalt
Asphalt is considered a bulky waste item for the landfill. There may also be asphalt companies in the area who could reuse it.

Asphalt Sealer
If the asphalt sealer is latex-based (you can clean up with water), it must be dried out and then disposed with your trash. If it is not latex-based, it is a hazardous material and must be brought to one of our Tox-a-Way days throughout the year. Please call or visit our website for Tox-a-Way event dates.

Asphalt Shingles
May require special handling by a certified contractor.  Check with your local transfer station or trash handler.

Automobiles
Salvage businesses such as River Metals Recycling.

Paper: Accepted by curbside or at our convenient drop off sites.
Plastic: Check with local supermarkets for recycling programs (Walmart, Kroger). They can be reused (for instance, as trash liners for small trash bins); We do not accept this item in curbside or convenient drop off sites.


Bakeware
 (cookie trays, baking pans, Pyrex)
If still in good condition, bakeware may be donated to local charities (such as Goodwill or church organization). Bakeware in any condition is unfortunately not recyclable.


Ballast
 (from fluorescent light)

Barbecue Grill

This item may be accepted by local metal scrap dealers or your local trash handler. This item is not recyclable by Decatur County Recycling.


Barbecue Tank

Bathroom Cleaner

Bathtub
 (Cast-Iron or other metal)
Contact a metal recycler or place for heavy trash pickup. There are also salvage companies that will buy certain styles. Alternatively, you might offer it for re-use by local charitable organizations. This item is not recyclable by Decatur County Recycling.


Bathtub
 (Fiberglass or Plastic)
This belongs in heavy trash pickup or local trash haulers.


Batteries

We no longer accept household alkaline batteries. Rechargeable and alkaline batteries (AAA,AA,C,D,etc) are accepted at several locations throughout Decatur County. Bikes
(scrap metal)
This is an item for heavy trash pickup or possibly a metal recycler. Bicycles in good working order should be donated to a local charitable organization or Goodwill. We do not accept these at our recycling sites or curbside.


Biodiesel

This is a hazardous material and must be brought to one of our Tox-a-Way days throughout the year. Please call or visit our website for Tox-a-Way event dates.


Blacktop
 (Asphalt)
Asphalt is considered a bulky waste item and belongs in the landfill or you may try a local asphalt company to see if they can reuse.


Blueprint Paper

Unfortunately, not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage.


Bookcase

Consider finding someone who could use it, advertise it locally, or put it in a yard sale, donate to a local charitable organization or Goodwill, etc. Avoiding the landfill is generally a good thing. Often accepted by trash haulers by request.


Books

Hardcover and Paperback. You may place these items in your curbside container or convenient drop off sites.


Bottles

Empty antifreeze, bleach, chemical, motor oil, and any other container that held hazardous materials are not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage. Empty cooking oil, glass (clear, green & brown), laundry detergent, plastic bottles that contained shampoo, soap, soda, water can be recycled. Place with curbside recycling or bring to one of our convenient drop off sites.

Bowls
 (metal, glass, ceramic, or plastic)
If still in good condition, bowls may be donated to local charities, Goodwill, Salvation Army, or offered for sale. Bowls and dishes in any condition are unfortunately not recyclable.


Box Springs

This is an item for heavy trash pickup or local landfill. Contact your trash hauler for information.


Boxboard

Boxboard refers to “flat” (uncorrugated) cardboard such as cereal boxes. Place with curbside recycling or bring to one of our convenient drop off sites. Please flatten before disposal.


Brake Fluid

This is a hazardous material and must be brought to one of our Tox-a-Way days throughout the year. Please call or visit our website for Tox-a-Way event dates.


Branches
 (trees and bushes)
Ideal for composting. Check with your local compost processor, garden clubs, or trash hauler. Your community may offer compost collection. In the City of Greensburg this item can be put out at your curb before 7 a.m. on your normal trash pick up day.


Bricks

Bricks are considered a bulky waste item and go in the landfill or for someone wanting clean fill items. In good condition, bricks are often used by landscapers and gardeners. Set out with a sign offering them to someone who needs them.


Broken Glass

Unfortunately, not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage. This includes mirrors, too. This type of glass is tempered and not recyclable.


Brown Envelopes

May be recycled curbside or taken to our convenient drop off sites.


BRUSH

(weeds, branches, sticks, bushes – See ‘branches’ above)


Bubble Wrap

If you know someone who does a lot of selling on eBay he or she may be glad to take it for reuse. Also, check with your local packing/shipping store. Otherwise, it is not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage…after popping, of course.


Buckets

Metal and plastic buckets. Scrap dealers may accept metal buckets; plastic buckets are not recyclable and must be thrown in the trash.


Bug Spray

This is a hazardous material and may be brought to Tox-a-way Day that takes place the first Saturday after Labor Day from 8-3 p.m. at the Decatur County Fairgrounds.


Building & Remodeling and Construction Materials

  • Construction & Demolition Debris – Asphalt, Asphalt Shingles, Bricks, Cement, Cinder Blocks, Clapboard, Concrete, Doors, Flooring, Insulation, Lumber, Mortar, Plaster, Plywood, Roofing, Sheetrock, Shingles, Tiles, Windows, and Wood all belong in the landfill. Unfortunately, no one in this area at this time is recycling construction and demolition debris. Some building materials in good, re-usable condition may be donated to Habitat for Humanity Stores throughout Indiana.
  • Polyurethane, Stains, Paint, and other Floor & Deck Finishes (oil-based only) – This is a hazardous material and may be brought to Tox-a-way Day that takes place the first Saturday after Labor Day from 8-3 p.m. at the Decatur County Fairgrounds.
  • Roofing Tar (Oil-based Asphalt Sealer) – This is a hazardous material and may be brought to Tox-a-way Day that takes place the first Saturday after Labor Day from 8-3 p.m. at the Decatur County Fairgrounds.
  • Bulky Waste – Check with your trash hauler.


Bullets

Butane Lighters

Canning jars are not recyclable because of the thickness of the glass. Reuse is best. Give to a friend who can use them or a reuse center such as Goodwill.

Carbon Monoxide Detector

Carburetor Cleaner

 (corrugated and boxboard)

The following types of cardboard are not recyclable: beer or soda cartons (because of the moisture barrier in the cardboard); egg cartons (because the paper fibers are too short to be recycled); pizza boxes (because of grease); and waxed cardboard (because of the coating).


Cardboard Tubes from Paper Towel and Toilet Paper Rolls

Place with curbside recycling or bring to one of our convenient recycling centers. Consider donating to youth/senior organizations for art projects.


Carpeting & Rugs
 (Area Rugs, Carpet with or without padding)

Cassette Tapes and Cassette Tape Boxes

CCA-Treated Wood

CCA-treated wood should only be disposed of in a lined landfill, not an incinerator. Do not dispose of CCA-treated wood in a backyard compost pile, brush pile, chipping pile, or burn pile. Call your local landfill or trash hauler for possible options.


CDs and CD Trays

These cannot be recycled locally. Cleaners

All-Purpose Cleaner, Ammonia, Bathroom Cleaner, Chlorine Bleach, Disinfectant, Drain Cleaner, Oven Cleaner, Toilet Bowl Cleaner, Upholstery Cleaner, Septic Tank Cleaner–All of these are considered household hazardous waste and must be disposed of at Tox-a-Way Day that occurs the first Saturday after Labor Day from 8-3 p.m. at the Decatur County Fairgrounds. It is important not to pour these chemicals down the drain all at once in their undiluted form because they have been known to have adverse effects in septic systems and at wastewater treatment plants. They can also contaminate groundwater and drinking water. It is unsafe to dispose of them in the garbage because they can be harmful to sanitation workers.


Clothing

Charitable organizations (Salvation Army, Goodwill, local churches) often take usable clothing. Clothing that is not appropriate for reuse (torn, stained) can be used as rags.


Coal Ash

Unfortunately, not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage after it is cold.


Coat Hangers

Metal hangers may be accepted by scrap dealers. Check your Yellow Pages.


Colored Glass Bottles

Place with curbside recycling or bring to one of our convenient drop off recycling centers. Please remove caps and rinse bottles before recycling.


Compact Disks and Compact Disk Trays

These cannot be recycled locally. Cooking Oil

This oil can be recycled for use as fuel for certain automobiles. Check freecycle.org to see if someone in your county is collecting it for this use. Otherwise, it must be placed in the garbage.


Cooking Oil Bottle

Cookware

If still in good condition, cookware may be donated to local charities or reuse centers, yard sales, or offered at a tag sale. Cookware in any condition is unfortunately not recyclable.


Copy Machine

Bring to Electronic recycling events or Tox-a-Way Day. There is no charge for disposal.


Copy Paper

Place with curbside recycling or bring to one of our convenient recycling centers.


Copy Paper Wrapper

Recycle if wrapper is paper; however, most wrappers for copy paper are not accepted for paper recycling, due to the plastic moisture barrier that coats the wrapper. Plastic wrappers for copy paper are not accepted in plastics recycling.


Couch

Heavy trash pick up or call your local trash hauler/landfill.


Creosote
 (from woodstoves)
Creosote cleaned out from woodstoves must be placed in the trash.


Creosote Sealer

Glass

Since glass does not degrade, a bottle thrown in a landfill today would still be around in the year 3000. That’s why it’s so important to recycle any glass food or beverage container curbside or at one of our recycling drop off centers. In addition to saving landfill space, recycling saves energy. For example, recycling one glass bottle saves enough energy to light a 100-watt bulb for four hours. Any clear, green, or brown glass bottle which held a food or beverage can be recycled. Empty and rinse; discard caps in trash. Labels and neck rings are okay, as they can be sorted out at the recycling facility. There are other glass items that unfortunately cannot be recycled.

Heavy trash pickup. An even better idea is to find someone who can use it, give it to Goodwill, place it in a yard sale, or donate to a local charity if they are in need.

Kitty Litter

Unfortunately, not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage. Kitty litter should not be composted. Kitty litter is good to absorb and dry out latex paint and then thrown in the trash.

Kitty Litter Buckets

Plastic buckets and pails that contained kitty litter are not recyclable and must be placed in the trash. Clean buckets should be offered for reuse.

Facial tissues (Kleenex or any other brand) are not recyclable and must be placed in the trash.

Latex Paint
Latex paint can be cleaned up with water. Read the label if you aren’t sure. Water will be listed as the first ingredient. Latex paint is not a hazardous waste. It can be disposed of in the regular garbage once the paint is dry. Paint will air dry if the lid is left off the can. However, if there is a large quantity remaining in the can, it will require a very long time to dry. You can speed up the process by stirring in clean kitty litter or pouring in shallow cardboard box.

Lawn Mowers (Riding & Push)

Each county has an assigned drop-off location for unused/expired medications and used syringes. Check with your local health department, pharmacy or physician to determine where to take these items.  There is a rule that unused ‘controlled substances,’ or narcotics, must be disposed of by law enforcement, so be sure to take these items to the Decatur County Sheriff Department or Greensburg Police Department where you can put these items in closed containers at no charge and no questions asked. Do not flush medications down the drain or toilet or throw in the trash.


Mercury (liquid), Mercury-Containing Devices, Mercury Thermometers & Thermostats

Mercury is toxic and should not be thrown out in the trash! Elemental mercury is a silvery liquid that is commonly used in thermometers and thermostats. Mercury is not hazardous to humans when it is in a sealed device. The danger to health and the environment arises when mercury-containing articles are broken and discarded in the trash. Metal

Steel and aluminum are the major metals in our everyday lives and both are easily recyclable. Recycling one aluminum can saves the energy equivalent of one cup of gasoline. There are 16 cups to a gallon. So, recycling eight 24-packs of soda would be the energy equivalent of filling a 12-gallon gas tank! To recycle beverage cans or food cans, simply rinse them and place for curbside recycling or take to one of our recycling centers. Scrap dealers accept these metals also.

Charitable organizations (reuse centers, Salvation Army, Goodwill, local churches) may take those in good condition. Most toys are not recyclable and, if not in reusable condition, must be placed in the garbage. Plastic toys are not recyclable even if they show the recycling (chasing arrows) symbol. If there is no number inside the arrows, that just means that it contains recycled materials.

Video Cassettes

These cannot be recycled locally. GreenDisk (www.greendisk.com) offers a mail-in option for recycling all forms of electronic media and their cases: diskettes, zip disks, CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, DVDs et al, video tape, audio tape, game cartridges, DAT, DLT, Beta or Digibeta, and virtually all other type of computer tapes, as well as many other forms of “techno-trash”. See their site for more information. Otherwise, dispose of video cassettes in the garbage.

Wallboard
Gypsum board is usable by farmers to spread on fallow fields. Otherwise, take to landfill or transfer station.

Yard Wastes/Leaves
Placing yard waste and leaves in the trash is prohibited by state regulations. The city of Greensburg residents have free yard waste pick up at the curb. Yard waste such as grass clippings and leaves must be bagged and marked “Yard Waste”. Large items such as tree limbs and large bushes can be put by the curb. Items are picked up on your normal trash pick up day. For those outside of the city, locations such as Leising Excavating may take these items for a charge. You can also use these items in a compost barrel.

Yogurt Containers
Check number in triangle on bottom of the container. If it is marked #1 through #7, you may put these in your curbside recycling bin or bring to one of our convenient drop off sites.
